Major Impact: Tag Team Wrestling in TNA
Added on Thursday, April 30th, 2009 at 1:15 pm to Opinion Columns

TNAStars.com Presents Major Impact!

I had no idea that the last time I wrote a TNA Major Impact article was October 18, 2007. Wow. I could have sworn that I wrote some of these things a few months ago, but I guess I was wrong.

Anyway, back to business. This week’s “major impact” was the presence of the TNA Tag Team tournament. Well, the tournament itself wasn’t really the major impact of the night since the matches were okay, but nothing stellar. However, the fact that TNA has a decent tag team division and they are building it to be bigger and better is something worth noting given TNA’s major competitor.

Unfortunately, tag team wrestling is something that is overlooked as a legitimate, long-term part of the planning process up north. Gone are the days of a single tag team dominating the scene like the Steiner Brothers, Demolition, the Road Warriors, the Hart Foundation, etc. The closest that we’ve come in recent years is the great pairing of John Morrison and The Miz on the Tuesday show, but even that fell apart in the end.

Guys like the Motor City Machine Guns have great futures in TNA, but they are building a large fan base due to their time as one of the best tag teams on television. Frankly, I could watch these two wrestle and talk all day. They’re great. However, I think that they – as performers – understand that they will have a longer shelf life if they continue as a tag team for the next few years and then slowly break apart into singles competition. Plus, with TNA only having one major television show each week it would be very hard for Chris Sabin or Alex Shelley break away from the pack of distinguished singles competitors already in TNA. TV time is king in the world of professional wrestling and these two seem to understand that they are more valuable (and for a longer period of time) when they are together.

Speaking of TNA tag teams, I think the British Invasion has some legs to it. And when did Rob Terry sign with TNA? I didn’t even realize that he wasn’t with Florida Championship Wrestling any more. The man is a monster.

Some other random thoughts from the show…

While the show certainly wasn’t paced the way that I would have liked it to be, I enjoyed watching it more than I’ve enjoyed watching any WWE show lately. Yes, I felt that there were a lot of stops and starts on Impact from the viewer’s perspective, but that’s better than watching the Levesque show on the other channel.

Who is this Jenna hanging around with Kevin Nash? Does anyone know what her deal is?

TNA Wrestling has an official iTunes application video game? How cool is that?! Okay, so I don’t have an iPhone and I don’t plan on ever getting one while the phone is locked into that horrible AT&T network (if you live in the tri-state area, you know what I’m talking about). But how cool is it that you can play a little wrestling video game on your cell phone? By the looks of the previews on tonight’s show, it looks like they’ve gone back to the basics and just created a regular wrestling game and not one of these ultra-involved disasters that the big two wrestling companies put out for the home consoles.

Hey, did anyone else notice the money sticking out of Awesome Kong’s wrestling tights? Sort of in the upper area if you know what I mean…

There were way too many video packages and vignettes on tonight’s show. Whoever is in charge of that part of TNA needs to cut back on that stuff and quick.

Mike Tenay is absolutely atrocious as an announcer. His voice has nothing compelling to it and his constantly-pissed facial expression is a bore at best.

When did Daffney get back into wrestling? Was she ever out of wrestling? I don’t even remember the last time I saw her – wasn’t she supposed to be “with” David Flair or something? Who knows any more…

Oh, and what is the purpose of the TNA Legends title? Like, what does “Legends” mean in the name of the championship? I know that when you win the World title, you’re the champion of the world, per se. What are you champion of when you win the Legends title?

Hey TNA – come back to New Jersey! Come back to Asbury Park!

Quote of the Night:
“Kurt! The title’s not going to fit!” – Mick Foley explaining that the World Championship title won’t fit where Kurt Angle plans to stick it

“I took eleven one time.” – Mick Foley commenting about how many steel chair shots he once took…from The Rock
